And I gotta tell ya As I opened the first few pages of Chances with my Caramel Macchiato sitting beside me, I get engrossed into the life of a Gangster named Gino Santangelo from when he was boy living on the streets trying to make a living sees the light of day as a Gangster and makes a living at it.
People come and go in Gino's life and he is trying to make the best of things Making "offers they can't refuse" is the name of the game and Gino does a pretty bang up job doing so.
Making friends along the way while making enemies that could cost him dearly, and has. Fast forward many years later, we see his daughter Lucky trying to make the best of things and loving every minute of it. The power of course is so juicy the she can't let it go when dearest Daddy comes back from a vacation.
How can Gino back away from his own operation, even if it is in the hands of his daughter? How can he let go of the past that has haunted him over the years and just become old like everyone else? Not Gino Santangelo. But when things start going south for Gino, he has to rely on his daughter Lucky to make things right. I got kind of lost a few times, for the book kept going back and forth from the past to the present.
But after a while, I got used to it and noticed it actually helped the story line a lot. It broaden your horizon on what was going on to the main characters and many of the main characters that were mentioned you as the reader didn't realize how much of a role they played in Santangelo's family all those many years ago. They talk about New York being a big city and all but when Jackie Collins put together these main characters, it's actually a small city where everyone knows everybody and has ran across each others path far too many times.
A great read, if you are into the whole "Godfather" affect and really into romance. Thank goodness that's over with! Leave the money on the table on your way out. See you next week. I actually read this book a number of years ago when I was not quite but nearly sweet I have to admit being the hormonal teenage that I was back then I actually fell head over heels in love with Gino Santangelo!
I could not put this book down, it was exciting, fast paced, the chapters alternate between two different characters with two different stories but you know they'll come together somewhere.

I love reading the reviews for this book, especially the one about the girl that found a dogeared copy on a park bench and hid it in her house when she couldn't read it and how she tried to read it at every available opportunity.
It really is that good and I only wish my experience of reading it for the first time was half as exciting as that! Chances is my favourite book of all time. It is a ridiculously amazing book. It is like t What to say about this book that hasn't already been said before? It is like ten feature length films in one. I remember the first time I read it and how amazing I thought it was. People describe books as unputdownable but this literally is, it's annoying when you have to stop reading and the hours fly by like minutes when reading it.
I don't know how many times I've read it but each time is just as good as the first and I'm not bored yet. Lucky Santangelo is a fantastic character and probably my favourite female fictional character of all time. I just wish Jackie would stop saying she wants Angelina Jolie to play her, I couldn't think of anyone worse to be Lucky! In fact I don't think there's anybody that could do the character justice, Lucky's a one off and an absolutely amazing character. So addictive to read about.
And Gino is another great character who view spoiler [must be about by now?! I dread the day Jackie kills him off! Chances has a fantastic cast of characters, all of whom are believable. Carrie's story is so horrible to read about but not all that hard to imagine.
Reading about America in the 20s, 30s etc was so enjoyable and fascinating and I loved feeling like I was there myself. Chances doesn't read like a book, you forget that you're reading a book and instead get lost in the world that Jackie Collins has created. This book, and indeed many of her other novels, has everything. Sex, glamour, love, comedy, murder, treachery, tragedy, money, literally everything you could possibly want from a book.
I always thought The Godfather was one of my favourite books but this trumps it by miles they are similar books so I think it's fair to compare them.
The only bad thing I could possibly say about this amazing book is that Jackie has not beat it so far. Lucky comes a close second but I think Chances is her best book and always will be. I enjoyed Goddess of Vengeance and gave it five stars simply because of Lucky Santangelo, I could never tire reading about her and have already earmarked Lucky as one of my holiday reads this year, two years after I last read it on holiday!

We also follow the story of Carrie, a beautiful young girl whose uncle forced her into a life of drugs and prostitution. Eventually we learn of the connection between Carrie and the Santangelo's, and it's just as wild of a connection as you'd expect from Jackie Collins.
If you're looking for a story that has a little of everything: glitz and glamor, organized crime, sex, drugs, love and deceit, friendship and family then don't look any further than Chances. I've missed the feeling of being completely absorbed in the place she has created for me. This was full of sex and violence and I was bored Especially the chapters with Carrie which showed on page rape and assault. It was giving me a headache. I remember enjoying book 2 at least. My copy of this book has been read so many times, that I finally had to break down and buy a new copy a few years ago. The binding was so badly broken that pages were falling out! I found a box of paperback books abandoned in the closet and made my way quickly through them, my innocent and young mind blown by what I read in my first of many I have read and own them all Jackie Collins novels.
