Super Paper Mario is not like the other preceding Paper Mario games, which are more turn-based focused. Super Paper Mario allows you to use some turn-based and RPG elements but adds side-scrolling and platforming to make the game feel more real-time.
Super Paper Mario is breaking the boundaries of turn-based RPGs, but it adds a 2D to 3D flip element, allowing players to change perspectives to find hidden areas or get an advantage in combat. Players of the Paper Mario series liked it, and others didn't - it divided the community. As mention before, not only do you follow Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser, but you can unlock and play as them as well. Each character has their own unique abilities for specific parts in a level - think how different characters are used in the LEGO video games - and you are not tied to just playing as one character as you can swap between any character, which you have unlocked first, at any time using the in-game menu.
You'll need to know their skills, starting with Luigi, who can jump the highest; peach, who can hover and access hard to reach areas, Bowser, who can breathe fire to defeat enemies; and of course, Mario, who is the only character with the ability to flip between 2D and 3D perspectives.
While going through the world of Super Paper Mario, you will also earn partners who are fairy-like beings called Pixls who can grant you one new ability like giving players hints or being able to throw objects. You will earn your first Pixl and Pure Heart at the very beginning of the game without even doing anything.
You'll feel right at home if you are a longtime Mario fan, but the dated graphics and copious amount of text may deter others from looking into getting into the action. Browse games Game Portals.
